Blog 3 Hans Hubermann

I chose to do my blog on Hans Hubermann.  He is by far my favorite character in this story.  I just love how he is always so calm.  He just seems like the perfect father figure.  When I first read about him, I could tell that he was going to be a kind and gentle man.  I pictured him as someone you could look at and know that he is a good guy.  Hans treats Liesel like every father should treat their daughter.  He is always there for her when she needs him.  Hans also has to put up with his wife's constant harshness.  He also has "demons" that are hidden from the reader in the first part of the story.  Hans never joined the Nazi party, and his feelings toward the Jews are not the same as most of the people around him.  His views are especially different from his only son's.  He does not believe that what is going on around him is right.  He is even committing the ultimate crime by hiding a Jew in his home.  Hans is very unique because despite the pressure from his peers and even his only son, he still lives by what he believes to be right.  That is why he is my favorite character in the story.  His relationship with Liesel is what I would call perfect.  You can tell that they love each other very much.  He rarely yells at her or punishes her.  When he does punish her and raises his voice, it is for a very good reason.  The one part that sticks out to me is when Liesel says she hates Hitler.  He slaps her and yells at her.  He only does this because he wants to protect her.  He knows that if she says this to anyone else besides her own family, that she will experience harsh consequences.

  1. I completely agree about Hans being so calm and a great father figure for Liesel. I agree, you can def. see how hard his life is because of his wife always putting him down and his son being apart of something he doesn't believe in. But, its really cool how he is still calm and always there for Liesel like you said. I love the fact that Hans does what he feels right instead of "taking the easy way out." If he would have just joined the Nazi party and would not be hiding a Jew in is house, he would have less stress and life would be a little easier on him. Since its not what he believes in he would rather take the risk and have more stress because it means doing the right thing.

  2. I definately liked Hans too. He seems like the kind of guy that would make a good father to anybody not just Leisel. I also liked the fact that he does what he thinks is right and not necessarily going with the flow. For example, like you said, he hid a Jew in his home. Most people at this time would never even think about doing this. Even most of his family would be completely against what he did.

  3. I did Hans too, because as you have explained he really is the only good thing in a truly dark world. I like that you point out of how great a father figure he is to Liesel. He really is truly caring to almost everyone that he comes in contact with. I also believe him to be very loyal, with what you said about his Jewish friends. He does not care that he may be found out. He'd rather be loyal to a friend than to follow the Nazi Party. In the end, Hans is a truly passionate friend who would do anything for the people he cares about.

  4. I think that Liesel and Hans have a perfect father-daughter relationship too. What they have, is what I would love to have with either of my parents. The fact that Liesel can talk to Hans and he listens and respects her wishes is wonderful. Every single thing that you wrote in this blog I agreed with. I loved what you wrote. He does fight demons, he does put up with his wife and he is a loving father. When you say he is commiting the ultimate crime, I loved that. You put it so perfectly. He is going against everything that everyone believes in but continues to do it anyway.
